We met up with Shynna Pennington to discuss her Pitt experience and her time at CGS. Shynna is a senior majoring in Administration of Justice.
Q: Why did you choose to attend Pitt?
A: As a child I spent a lot of time in the old children's hospital getting surgeries. Due to my Spastic Diplegic Cerebral palsy, my legs were taken from me periodically, 20 times to be exact. I used to look out my hospital room window and see the Pitt student going back and forth. I would think to myself "I want to be one of those kids, they've got somewhere to be. I'm going to go somewhere one day." So when I got healthy enough I applied to Pitt.
Q: Why did you choose your CGS major and how does it relate to your future plans?
A: I chose Administrative Justice because, I came from an environment where crime is high. I've seen numerous friends go down the wrong path. I wanted to learn how to save people from walking that path, I figured Administrative Justice was the way.
Q: What keeps you busy outside of classes?
A: I am President of Lambda Alpha Epsilon here at Pitt. In addition, I'm on the URB and am a Peer Note Taker for disabled students. I also intern at the Allegheny County Jail. I'm also the mother of an extremely bright seven year old little girl.
Q: What have been some of your greatest accomplishments and/or challenges here at Pitt?
A: My biggest challenge at Pitt occurred when I first transferred. I wasn't use to the campus size and it took me a while to get used to things. My biggest challenge as a senior graduating this spring is finding work after graduating. My greatest accomplishment is reviving Lambda Alpha Epsilon and becoming an intern. I'm also proud of the friends I've made along the way. They're all great people. There's not too many like that where I'm from.
Q: Do you have any advice for your fellow Pitt students?
A: While at Pitt do something that you love. Something that even when it frustrates you, it makes you smile. It's how you find your calling. No matter what, never quit. You've come too far.
